The method is carried out by contacting the formation with an aqueous mixture comprising a water-soluble anionic polymer having a molecular weight greater than 100,000 and subsequently con- tacting the anionic polymer with a polymer stabi- lizing fluid comprising a water-soluble cationic polymer having a molecular weight greater than 1,000.
