ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : This invention is concerned with a method of varying the secondary cooling effect in the continuous casting of steel, particularly when the casting cross sections are altered, com- prising spraying a coolant on the surface of the casting from spray nozzles on each side of the casting and changing the perpendicular distance of the nozzles from the casting surface to vary the cooling effect when the casting cross section is altered. The method according to the invention is characte- rized in that the inter-nozzle spacing of two or more nozzles located side-by-side across the casting is varied to compensate changes in the sprayed surface area on the casting and conse- quent changes in the cooling effect that are due to changes in the distance of the nozzles from the casting surface and/or to changes in the included angle of the spray fans. An appara- tus for carrying out the method of the invention is also described.
