16 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a method for and a composition for treating viral infections associated with periods of viral latency. More specifically, the present invention provides a prophylactic therapy to maintain the virus in a latent state and an active treatment of recurrent viral reactivation that will facilitate a return to viral latency. Pursuant to the present invention, a noncysteine substrate is administered as a composition to a patient having a latent viral infection in an amount sufficient to increase the intracellular glutathione levels of the cells of a patient that harbors a latent or active virus.
