ABSTRACT A system for digital signal coding by vector quantization uses blocks of n simultaneously coded signal samples, the coordinates of which are mapped from an n-dimensional to a one dimensional space, for example by using Hilbert's curve, in a manner such as to preserve adjacency proper- ties, the one dimensional space being divided into inter- vals each associated with an index forming a coded value of points falling in that interval which indexes are used during decoding to look up mean values of vectors falling in their respective intervals. The code book may be com- piled by sorting coordinates of points in the one dimen- sional space which are produced during a training or other signal sequence, grouping the sorted coordinates into intervals, and calculating the mean values of coor- dinates in those intervals.
