ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for breaking up carbon blocks comprises a breaker and a conveyor for feeding carbon blocks to the breaker. The breaker has a vertically- movable splitter blade for breaking pieces of carbon off the carbon blocks. Sensing means are provided for determing the height of the carbon blocks,and means are provided for pushing each of the carbon blocks incrementally into the breaker. The arrangement is such that each of the carbon blocks is pushed into the breaker in incremental steps the length of each of which is at least 0.3 times the height of that carbon block.
