ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for continuously stretching a thermoplastic web comprises heating the thermoplastic web which has been fed to an apparatus for performing the process at a predetermined input speed, to the stretching temperature, and pulling and stretching the thermoplastic web with a stretching speed, which is greater than the predetermined input speed. After heating, the thermoplastic web is guided over at least one output buffer member with a sliding friction of a predetermined, controlled amount. As soon as it passes the output buffer member or members the thermoplastic web is acted on immediately by a stretching mechanism to pull it at the stretching speed. An apparatus for performing the stretching process of the invention comprises a hot air conduit with a guide mechanism and at least one output buffer mounted therein, and a stretching mechanism.
