ABSTRACT "METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR CONVERTING LINEARLY CODED DIGITAL SIGNALS INTO NON LINEARLY CODED DIGITAL SIGNALS " Summary For linearly coded signals including twos complement signals representing negative values, the highest value bit is a sign bit V indicating whether the signal value is positive or negative. A higher value portion (213 to 25) of the linearly coded signal (SDL) is used to provide the higher value portion (A9 to A1) of a drive address for a first store (K1) containing 8- bit combinations respectively associated with the segments of the multiple segment µ-law or A-law characteristic curve governing the conversion. The lower value portion of the drive address is provided by the output of a NOR- gate N whose inputs comprise the lower value portion (24 to 21- the lowest value bit 20 being ignored) of SDL. A second store (K2) contains 4-bit combinations respect- ively associated with compartments into which each segment is divided. A drive address for the second store comprises, in descending bit value order, the sign bit (V), a lower value portion (05 to 01) of the relevant first- store bit combination and the utilised lower value portion (24 to 21) of SDL. The non-linearly coded signal (SDK) then comprises, in descending bit value order, the inverted sign bit, the higher value portion (08 to 06) of -20- the first-store bit combination and the second-store bit combination (04 to 01). When arranged to operate in accordance with the A-law, SDK may be in the NININI code . -21-
