The invention provides a method of detecting at least one particle, in a plurality of particles, which possesses at least one predetermined characteristic, which includes the steps of: (a) scanning a beam of incident radiation at a selected wavelength over at least some of the particles so that, in response to the incident radiation, a respective secondary signal emanates from at least some of the particles, the frequency of the incident radiation being chosen so as to stimulate emission of at least a respective predetermined signal by each particle which possesses the predetermined characteristic and upon which the incident radiation impinges, (b) scanning each secondary signal into at least one detector, and (c) using at least one detector to detect the presence of the predetermined signal.
