ABSTRACT In a process for expanding tobacco by impregnation with gas and subsequent thermal processing, tobacco with a moisture content in the range from 20 to 40%-wt (relative to the dry weight of the tobacco) at a temperature at a range from -10 to 0°C, is exposed to a carbon dioxide gas atmosphere at a pressure in the range from 3 to 17 bar. The tobacco is then removed from the high pressure system with controlled reduction of pressure into a thermal processing system.
