ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A supersaturated solution of ground bauxite and caustic soda is fed to a plurality of stirrer tanks in a product cascade. Seed crystals are added to the upstream stirrer tank of the product cascade and all of the precipitated crystals are passed from each tank to the following tank and at the last tank all of the crystals are withdrawn and the coarsest crystals are subsequently calcined and used in the production of aluminum. The liquors in the product cascade are maintained at a temperature between 75°C and 90°C and after extraction of most of the crystals all of these liquors are added together and fed sequentially through a further row if stirrer tanks in a seeding cascade where- in the temperature is maintained between 50°C and 65°C. These tanks are arranged in a row and the spent liquor is taken from the last cascaded tank, evaporated, and mixed with ground bauxite and caustic soda for subsequent concentration and use as the mother liquor or supersaturated solution. The crystals stripped from the last stirrer tank are withdrawn and added to the first of the stirrer tanks of the product cascade as the seed crystals. Each of these stirrer tanks of the product cascade has a central vertical shaft and at least three vertically spaced paddles carried on the shaft and inclined at different angles to form three zones, with concentration of solids in the liquid in the stirrer tanks increasing towards the bottom.
