ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Starting sheet assemblies for use in electrolytic refinement of metal such as copper are fabricated by preparing flat ribbon blanks, forcing each of the blanks into a ribbon bending die in which the blank is formed into a substantially U-shaped bent ribbon, and moving the die to a press for use in straightening a starting sheet and attaching the ribbon blanks thereto, with the U-shaped bent ribbon held in the die and with the open side of the U-shaped bent ribbon directed toward the press. The ribbon bending die is first directed upward to receive the ribbon blank therein and to facilitate the ribbon bending operation in cooperation with a down- wardly movable ribbon bending head, and the die is then turned so as to be directed horizontally toward the press. The die is thereafter advanced to the press to enable the free ends of the bent ribbon to be applied to the starting sheet in the press and attached to the same by the operation of the press. As the die moves to the press, the bent ribbon embraces and carries a suspension bar which has been placed in the path of movement thereof.
