ABSTRACT A METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR HYDRAULIC MINING This invention provides a method of hydraulic mining which forms a tunnel by stepwise advancing a cylindrical shield housing a cutting boom and gradually erecting a temporary continuous cylindrical tunnel support passage built in longitudinally abutting sections within the formed part of the tunnel. Each section is erected in the space immediately behind the shield when it has advanced a step. On completion of the tunnel the cutting boom is replaced by a high pressure water hose, which hydraulically retreat-mines the exposed face, and the cylindrical passage is gradually dismantled by removing the section adjacent to the shield to enable the shield to retreat stepwise. Means is provided to advance the shield, anchor means to co-operate with said advancing means, and cylindrical tunnel support members for stepwise temporary assembly into a space between the advancing shield and the anchor. The shield includes a rearwardly extending tail skin to shelter the space immediately behind the shield during erection of a support member.
