ABSTRACT "A METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR IMPROVING TELEVISION PICTURE QUALITY BY ACTIVITY-CONTROLLED DPCM-CODING" From picture signal values (A,B,C,D), which surround the current scan value (x), of the current half-frame and from the picture signal values (E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M) of the preceding half-frame an activity criterion (AK) is determined and in dependence upon two threshold values (S1, S2), the estimated value is determined from the picture signal values (E,F,G...) of the last half-frame, from the picture signal values (E,F,G...) of the last television half-frame and the picture signal values (A,B,C,D) of the present television half-frame, or only from the picture signal values (A,B,C,D) of the present television half-frame.
