ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Test recovery of crude oil by injection of a heat carrier into the oil stratum is effected by generating thermal energy in the crude oil deposit or at a location at which a well enters this deposit by carrying out a catalytic methanization reaction and transferring the resulting heat to the heat carrier which can be steam or an inert gas. The heat carrier then is introduced into the crude oil stratum and increases the mobility of the crude oil.
