Abstract of the Disclosure It is known that gaseous constituents of gas mixtures can be monitored by so-called detector tubes which are filled with a chemical reagent which changes colour as a gas sample passes through the tube. The length of the discoloured zone is proportional to the quantity of gas con- stituent to which the reagent is sensitive. Prior devices using such tubes have either only measured average values of gas concentration or, if able to measure instantaneous concentration, have been mechanically complicated. The present invention enables continuous monitoring of gas concentration and can provide an automatic alarm if is exceeds a predetermined maximum or falls below a predetermined minimum. Photoelectric detectors are disposed along the tube to sense the discolouration and they are repetitively scanned to produce electrical signals which are combined to determine and indicate the rate of advance of discolouration along the tube. If the rate of advance exceeds an adjustable limit value, an alarm can be given to indicate a peak value of gas concentration.
