2056985 9014635 PCTABS00002 A method of analysing a visual image of a complex three dimensional object such as a plant, avoids misclassification of shadows as plant material. A colour video signal of plant material positioned against a background of substantially uniform colour is analysed to give colour coordinates for each pixel in three dimensional colour space. Each pixel is classified as representing background or plant material, according to whether the colour coordinates of the pixel fall inside or outside, respectively, a substantially cone shaped volume in colour space. The cone shaped volume is determined by extending a cone from a region representing the colour of the background surface, towards the origin of the colour coordinate system. Preferably pixels close to the origin are classified as plant material whether or not they lie within the cone.
