A method and apparatus are provided for selective collision-induced dissociation of a substance, by resonance excitation of ions. An ion stream is supplied into a quadrupole ion guide operated at elevated pressure with a buffer gas. In addition to a radio frequency field for guiding ions through the ion guide, an extra field or other excitation is provided. This field is selected to cause resonance excitation of parent ions of interest. These ions would then gain kinetic energy and undergo enhanced collision-induced dissociation with a buffer gas. This generates fragment ions, so that the resultant ion stream, containing remaining parent ions and fragment ions can be analysed in a suitable analyzer. The method essentially enables the two steps of selection of a particular parent ion and generation of fragment ions by collision-induced dissociation to be carried out in a single step, giving a simpler apparatus and enhanced efficiency.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant la dissociation sélective induite par collision d'une substance par excitation d'ions par résonance. Un flux ionique est envoyé dans un guide d'ions quadripolaires fonctionnant à une pression élevée avec un gaz tampon. En sus d'un champ haute fréquence pour guidage d'ions par le biais du guide d'ions, on dispose d'un champ supplémentaire ou d'un autre moyen d'excitation. Ce champ est sélectionné pour provoquer une excitation par résonance d'ions parentaux à étudier. Ces ions vont ensuite obtenir un gain en énergie cinétique et subir une dissociation induite par collision améliorée avec un gaz tampon. Ceci génère des ions fragmentaires de manière que le flux ionique obtenu, contenant des ions parentaux restants et des ions fragmentaires, puisse être analysé dans un analyseur adéquat. Le procédé permet essentiellement d'effectuer en une seule étape une sélection d'un ion père particulier et une génération d'ions fragmentaires par dissociation induite par collision, obtenant ainsi un appareil plus simple et une efficacité améliorée.
