ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of finding the range of en object relative to optical corralator means provided with optical imaging means to image such object on optical array means is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of employing respectively different beam guidance systems each operatively associated with a respective photo-electric receiver system responsive to an axial displacement of the image relative to the array to provide respective electrical periodic output signals, which are each related in phase to the range of the object and which differ from one another in frequency, and comparing the electrical output signals derived from the receiver systems associated with respective beam guidance systems with one another for ascertaining the geometric image position of the principal maximum in respect to the geometric image position of the secondary maxima to provide an unambiguous indication of the range of the object for the object displacements resulting in phase-shifts extending over a plurality of periods of at least one of the electrical signals. Also disclosed is range finding apparatus for carrying out the method.
