33 ABSTRACT: For the transmission of speech data in time- division multiplex, a frame frequency of 8 kHz with fixedly assigned channels in the frame is effective, whereas such a fixed assignment is very disadvantageous for the transmission of data packets. Consequently, according to the invention the frame is subdivided into several groups each having the same number of words, and each group comprises either exclusively narrow-band channels for the transmission of speech data or is associ- ated with the high-rate channel. A signaling word which for groups comprising narrow-band channels always com- prises an unambiguous bit sample of, for example, the highest priority is assigned to each group. When a sub- scriber station wants access to a word group in the high- rate channel it transmits its own address and possibly priority data in a signaling word. When this bit sample is received without any disturbance the subscriber station immediately occupies the assigned group of words in the high-rate channel for the transmission of a data packet. Judging the priorities of individual subscriber stations can be done in different ways. When the bit sample of groups comprising narrow-band channels gets the highest priority, these channels are automatically protected from access as a high-rate channel, and a central unit can in a flexible way increase the number of narrow-band channels by transmitting a further group of this bit sample in the signaling word.
