A B S T R A C T During filling coal into oven chambers of a coke oven battery the lower end of the filling pipe after ending a filling step and during beginning of lifting is closed, and the closure is maintained until the next filling step. For this purpose the lower end of the filling pipe is provided with a movable closing element which is liftable and lowerable as well as turnable by hydraulic cylinder-piston units.
