ABSTRACT The diameter of a supporting tube of an optical fibre preform is kept constant, notwithstanding the tendency of the tube to collapse as a result of the high temperature necessary to react reagents and deposit raw material. The diameter is controlled by generating between the internal and the external tube surfaces a pressure difference variable in inverse proportion to the diameter of the tube itself and to the total gas flow at an input end of the tube. Means are provided to generate the pressure difference by setting up a pressure drop at the output end of the tube in a device which effects the separation of solid raw material particles from residual gases.
