Abstract: Method of and device for storing and reading digital information, at option protected or not by an error correcting code. The information stored on a medium (20) in the described system is protected by a double symbol correcting code involving interleaving between the codes. After reading and execution of the error protection, the information is organized in sectors. Subsequent to synchronization information and header information, such a sector contains sub-header information. There is provided a detector (30) for a first and a second sub-mode indication value. In the former case the sector contains further error protection information, for which purpose a special decoder (34) is activated. In the second case further user information is present in the location of this error protection information, and the latter decoder is not activated. The reliability is still further increased by repeating the sub-mode indication value.
