ABSTRACT "A METHOD OF AND SYSTEM FOR SAFEGUARDED TRANSMISSION OF DIGITAL SIGNALS" In order to achieve a higher resistance to inter- ference in respect of alien sources of deliberte interference in the use of short wave communications connections, the following cooperative measures are proposed. (a) The stations are equipped with highly accurate quartz crystal clocks QH and the bursts (Be, Br) which are to be transmitted are accompanied by a time signal (ZC) with the aid of which it is possible to correct any time dis- crepancies between the stations. (b) Employing an automatic response arrangement (ARQ), use is made of a variation in the timing of consecutive burst transmissions including the acknowledgement response (RQ). (c) The error-protected data in the burst is trans- mitted in enciphered form. (d) The cipher sequence for the enciphering of the data component (IN) and the error-protection component (EDC) of the burst (Be, Bi) and for the frequency address which determines the transmitting and receiving frequencies is re- calculated for each burst on the basis of the clock time given by the quartz crystal clock (QH) and on the basis of the receiving subscriber number.
