ABSTRACT: A method of and a welding torch for arc weld- ing, in which the same type of gas is used for the shielding gas and the plasma gas. A single gas flow is split in the nozzle of the welding torch in order to form a central cylindrical plasma gas column and an enveloping shielding gas jacket. The gas plasma is accelerated by constriction of the shielding gas jacket downstream from the nozzle. To this end, the welding torch comprises a gas conductor having an outlet aper- ture whose free sectional area is equal to or smaller than the sectional area of the plasma orifice in the nozzle. - 15 -
