A method of applying at least one symbol onto a visible rubber surface of a tire includes the step of vulcanizing at least the visible rubber surface of the tire and engraving at least one symbol into the visible rubber surface after vulcanization. Preferably, the symbol is engraved into the sidewall of the tire. A colored rubber strip may be applied to a recess in the sidewall which is then covered with a rubber cover strip. In the step of engraving the cover strip is removed so that the underlying colored rubber layer becomes visible for displaying the desired symbols. The engraving step can be performed with a laser.
