ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The serviceability of a data transmission system is tested by actuating a key in a testing station to cause data bits with a specific marking polarity, a synchronising bit, and a status bit with a spacing polarity to be repeatedly transmitted to a remote station, in which if these bits are repeatedly received correctly they produce an indication and are automatically transmitted back to the testing station, where again if they are repeatedly received correctly they produce an indication. Actuation of a further key enables the transmission link and remote station to be by-passed for test- ing the testing station itself.
