PHD 80.039 6 12.2.1981 ABSTRACT: "Method of blackening steel components, in particular for cathode ray tubes". An adhering bismuth layer is provided on the steel components by electroless plating in a bismuth salt dispersion or bismuth salt solution. The steel components thus coated are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere, for example in air, at temperatures between 350 and 650 C for such a period of time that a black layer is formed on the surface of the bismuth-coated parts. A high thermal emis- sion power of the surface of the steel components in the overall infrared wavelength range from 1 to 30 µm and simultaneously a very high electron reflection is obtained.
