A method and apparatus for processing an optical fiber includes generating a continuous or pulsed arc in a first area wherein the arc creates a plasma in one or more gases in the first area. The method further includes positioning a portion of the fiber in a second area adjacent to and outside of the plasma region, wherein coating material that is present on the optical fiber portion is removed when the plasma is present. Alternatively, in the case of a pulsed arc, the optical fiber portion may be positioned at least partially within the plasma region. The positioning step may be performed prior to or subsequent to the arc generating step. The method and apparatus may be utilized in a system that also strips and cleaves optical fibers. Also, a method for reducing the gap resistance between two electrodes by injecting negative ions into the area between the electrodes.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de traiter une fibre optique. Ledit procédé consiste à générer un arc continu ou pulsé dans une première zone, l'arc créant un plasma dans un ou plusieurs gaz dans la première zone; et à positionner une partie de la fibre dans une seconde zone adjacente à la région de plasma et extérieure à celle-ci, un matériau de revêtement disposé sur la partie fibre optique étant éliminé lorsque le plasma est présent. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, dans le cas d'un arc pulsé, la partie fibre optique peut être positionnée au moins partiellement à l'intérieur de la région de plasma. L'étape de positionnement peut s'exécuter avant ou après l'étape de génération d'arc. Ce procédé et cet appareil peuvent s'utiliser dans un système qui dénude et clive également les fibres optiques. L'invention concerne également un procédé permettant de limiter la résistance d'écartement entre les deux électrodes par injection d'ions négatifs dans la zone située entre lesdites électrodes.
