Debris, such as soil from a coking plant, is cleaned by simultaneously separating heavy metals and oils from the debris. The debris is primarily an inert substance. Acetic anhydride is employed, which is mixed with the debris, so as to remove any moisture from it. After the acetic anhydride has been added, aqueous acetic acid is distilled off from the mixture. The remaining distillant is then filtered to remove the heavy metals and oils from the debris, leaving clean debris and separated heavy metals and oils.
