ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of cleaning the pulp pit of a wood grinder to periodically remove sticks and slabs accumulated in said pulp pit which is positioned below a rotating grinding stone and is dammed by an overflow weir, which comprises displacing the overflow weir from its damming position to an emptying position in which the dammed pulp flows out from the pulp pit and carries with it said accumulated slabs and sticks and thereafter returning the overflow weir to the damming position. Also a wood grinder comprises a rotatable grinding stone and a pulp pit dammed by an overflow weir positioned below the grinding stone and adapted to be operated in a damming position and an emptying position allowing outflow of pulp, sticks and slabs from said pulp pit.
