ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is directed to a novel method and apparatus for clearing a channel or opening through an ice-covered body of water. Explosives are placed on the undersurface of or embedded in an ice cap, through which a channel is to be cleared. Whereas known techniques for clearing a channel through an ice cap by placing explosives under an ice cap were limited by uneven underwater ice formations or extremely thick ice, the present invention overcomes these obstacles by provision of new techniques and equipment including an inflatable tube attached to a string of explosives and by the use of a novel underwater sled which runs along the under- surface of the ice and carries the explosives under the ice cap.
