ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a method of collecting liquids, such as oil, which is inadvertently spilled along a railway track section to prevent its contaminating the adjacent soil areas. An earthen reservoir is provided beneath the track section and a flexible liquid impervious liner is installed in it. The liquid impervious flexible liner generally follows the contour of the space, and comprises a layer of pervious fabric material having on at least one of its sides a layer of liquid impervious material, such as rubber. The liner is operable to prevent escape of liquid through the liner from the containment space and means are provided for removing liquid from the reservoir. The containment space is filled with ballast material which is covered with a layer of pervious fabric material which prevents particulate material such as sand, from passing down into the ballast.
