In order to compensate for inherent polarization dependency in a photodetector comprising a photosensitive detector and at least one interface through which, in use, light for detection will be incident upon the detector along a predetermined optical axis, the at least one interface being between media having different refractive indices, the interface is inclined relative to the predetermined optical axis such that an axis of minimum inherent polarization dependent response of the detector is tilted relative to the predetermined optical axis to such an extent that the inherent polarization response is substantially minimized. Where the photosensitive detector is already housed in a housing with a window whereby light for detection reaches the detector, the housing can be tilted, in which case there are three such interfaces, namely a first at the surface of the detector and one at each surface of the window. If correction is made during manufacture of the photodetector, however, either or both of the detector surface and the window could be tilted.
