2111567 9323843 PCTABS00028 In a ferroelectric liquid crystal display (1) the inter-pixel gaps are conditioned to improve the contrast of the display by applying a voltage (11, 13, 17) of such magnitude, polarity and duration to the display as to set all inter-pixel gaps in a predetermined state without altering the initial alignment of the pixels. The display is then isolated from the voltage source for a period which is sufficiently long for redistribution of charges in the system to be effected, after which the pixels can be switched without switching the inter-pixel gaps.
