A method of constructing a pipeline weight. Firstly, providing a vehicle tire having a pair of opposed annular faces connected at their peripheral edges by a tread bearing surface. Secondly, cutting a channel across one of the opposed annular faces of the vehicle tire. The channel extends substantially through the tread bearing surface, thereby dividing the vehicle tire into two arcuate shells joined by a connective web. The pipeline weight constructed in accordance with this method consists of the arcuate shells set on their tread bearing surfaces and filled with ballast. When put into position, the connective web engages a pipe of the pipeline with the arcuate shells positioned on either side of the pipe.
