To the end of improving an engine control method which can switch over the valve operating property of the engine in a step-wise manner according to the operating condition of the engine and which can control the slipping of the driven wheels through the use of a leaner air/fuel mixture so that it may not be undesirably affected by the deviations of the actual values of various parameters from the designed values of the parameters, the engine speed and/or the load condition at which the valve operating mode is to be switched over is shifted to a higher value when a traction control is in effect (when a control process involving a leaner air/fuel mixture is being executed), the width of hysteresis of the point at which the valve operating mode is to be switched over is increased when a traction control is in effect, or the air/fuel mixture is made richer for the high speed mode than for the low speed mode.

Afin d'améliorer une méthode de commande d'un moteur qui peut modifier séquentiellement les paramètres de fonctionnement des soupapes selon les conditions de marche et qui peut prévenir le patinage des roues par l'utilisation d'un mélange air-carburant plus pauvre qui a pour effet de le soustraire à l'influence néfaste des déviations des valeurs actuelles de divers paramètres par rapport aux valeurs nominales, le seuil où le régime de rotation et/ou l'état de charge du moteur doit être modifiée est décalée vers une valeur supérieure lorsque la régulation de traction est enclenchée (c'est-à-dire lorsque l'appauvrissement du mélange air-carburant est commandé), l'amplitude de l'hystérésis au point où les paramètres de fonctionnement des soupapes doivent se modifier est augmentée si la régulation de traction est enclenchée ou le mélange air-carburant est enrichi pour le mode haut régime par rapport à celui du mode bas régime.
