ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of controlling clutch operation, for a vehicle having a transmission and a clutch, comprises: setting a reference capacity of said clutch corresponding to a parameter representing vehicle speed and an accelerator opening representing the driver's intention of acceleration or deceleration; and controlling the degree of the engine power transmitted to the wheels by adjusting the capacity of the clutch so as to coincide with the reference capacity. An embodiment of the method includes a method of determining clutch engagement completion in continuously variable speed transmission by setting a lower limit of an expected clutch engagement completion vehicle speed corresponding to an accelerator opening representing the driver's intention of acceleration or deceleration, determining, during vehicle starting, that the clutch valve is closed to engage the clutch completely when it is detected that the vehicle speed is below the lower limit and the opening of the clutch valve is above a given opening, and then permitting successive speed ratio control.
