ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for controlling pitch in papermaking is disclosed. The process comprises incorporating in a pitch-containing paper pulp slurry about 0.01 - 0.5% by weight of pulp solids of a water-soluble linear cationic polymer comprised of units of the formula Image X ? wherein A is a (C2 - C3) alkylene group, R is H or CH3; R1 is a hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl group, R2 is a (C1 - C4) alkyl group, R3 is a (C1 - C4) alkyl group, and X is an anion; said polymer having a viscosity average molecular weight, Mv, of about 35,000 to 70,000
