ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and device control turn-off current- converter switches (V1, V2) of a bridge arm (6) of a voltage source converter (4). The turn-off current- converter switches alternately turn on and off in response to control signals (AV1', AV2') generated by a controller (14, 16). In accordance with the invention, portions of the generated control signals (AV1', AV2') standing by are cut out as a function of the load-current actual value (iLx) in relation to two load-current limiting values (I1, I2), which results in new control signals (AV1, AV2) for the turn-off current- converter switches (V1, V2). A failure of the turn-off current-converter switches (V1 or V2) to turn off due to excessively high junction temperatures thus cannot cause a short circuit of the converter (4) on its dc voltage side.
