A method of cooling using an extended binary refrigerant system containing methane and a C3 hydrocarbon such as propylene and/or propane is disclosed. The extended binary refrigerant from a compressor final discharge is separated into a methane-rich vapor fraction and at least one C3 rich liquid fraction so as to provide various temperatures and levels of refrigeration in various heat exchange stages. The method and corresponding refrigeration system can be utilized in plants utilizing low pressure or high pressure demethanizers.

La présente invention concerne un procédé de refroidissement au moyen d'un système de réfrigérant binaire étendu qui contient du méthane et un hydrocarbure en C3, tel que du propylène et/ou du propane. Le réfrigérant binaire étendu est séparé à la sortie d'un compresseur en une fraction de vapeur riche en méthane et en au moins une fraction de liquide riche en C3 afin d'obtenir diverses températures et divers niveaux de réfrigération dans divers étages d'échange de chaleur. Le procédé et le système de réfrigération correspondant peuvent être utilisés dans des installations utilisant des déméthaniseurs basse pression ou haute pression.
