A method of creating a borehole in an earth formation is provided, in a selected direction relative to an adjacent borehole formed in the earth formation. The method comprises arranging electromagnetic source means in a first of said boreholes at a plurality of locations along the length thereof, said electromagnetic source means inducing an electromagnetic field extending into a second of said boreholes. Electromagnetic field measuring means are arranged at a selected depth di in the second borehole, said measuring means being capable of measuring said electromagnetic field. The measuring means are operated so as to measure said electromagnetic field, and from the measured electromagnetic field, components of the electromagnetic field are determined including at least two components in directions substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the first borehole. From said at least two components, a direction parameter indicative of the direction of the borehole relative to the adjacent borehole is determined.

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé de création d'un trou de forage dans une formation terrestre, dans une direction sélectionnée par rapport à un trou de forage adjacent. Le procédé consiste à placer un dispositif générant une source électromagnétique dans un premier de ces trous de forage, à plusieurs endroits, sur la longueur de celui-ci, le dispositif à source électromagnétique induisant un champ électromagnétique qui s'étend dans un second de ces trous de forage. Des dispositifs de mesure du champ électromagnétique sont placés à une profondeur sélectionnée d¿i? dans le second trou de forage, ce dispositif de mesure étant apte à mesurer ce champ électromagnétique. On actionne ces dispositifs de mesure de façon à mesurer ce champ électromagnétique, et à partir du champ électromagnétique mesuré, on détermine les composantes du champ électromagnétique qui comprennent au moins deux composantes dans les sens pratiquement perpendiculaires à l'axe longitudinal du premier trou de forage. A partir d'au moins ces deux composantes, on détermine un paramètre directionnel indiquant le sens du trou de forage par rapport au trou de forage adjacent.
