ABSTRACT Disclosed is a method of creating a program for machining a cylindrical groove configuration on the circum- ferential surface of a cylindrical workpiece by controlling a Z-axis and a rotary axis through an interactive type numerical control apparatus, wherein a rectangular coordi- nate system composed of the Z-axis and a linear axis (C) obtained by developing the rotary axis (C) in the circumferential direction of the workpiece is set, a unit of the Z-axis and the linear axis (C) is represented by length and the circumferential surface (12a) of the work- piece obtained when the workpiece is once rotated is caused to correspond to a predetermined region on the plane of the rectangular coordinate system, and the program for machin- ing a groove configuration is created by interactively inputting necessary data using coordinate values of the rectangular coordinate system. A command sent to the rotary axis (C) is based on the unit of length. With this arrangement, a large amount of data can be used as is, even if a diameter of the cylindrical workpiece is changed, whereby a time needed for creating the machining program can be shortened.
