-30- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Crosslinked polymers are prepared by reacting mutually reactive side groups, comprising reacting polymer chains containing carbonyl side groups, optionally protected, and 1,2- or 1,3-diol side groups, optionally protected, in the presence of an acid catalyst, thereby forming crosslinking bridges between polymer chains. Crosslinked polymers are also prepared in which polymer chains are bonded together by a low molecular weight crosslinking agent.
