A method of culturing respiratory epithelial cells in vitro on a fluid permeable collagen substrate derived from bovine chorionic membrane tissue. The epi- thelial cells are harvested from the nasal mucosa of a human donor using a minimally-invasive brushing technique. The culture method includes the step of incubating the plated cells in a relatively undisturbed state such that a substantial amount of the plated cells adhere, flatten and begin to replicate on the substrate surface.
