ABSTRACT Apparatus for treating athlete's foot comprises a laser adapted to emit a laser beam in the form of a pulse having a selected time period and an optical system for directing and focusing radiation from said laser onto a foot to be treated. Such system has an entrance end adapted to be secured to the laser in optical communication therewith and an exit end adapted to be contacted with an area of the foot infected with dermatophytosis. At least one mirror is provided for guiding the beam through the system, and a lens is located adjacent the exit end in the path of the beam to focus the beam to provide a beam energy density level at the exit end of at least 2 Joules/cm2. The apparatus of the invention permits the thermal treatment of athlete's foot without the painful effects of burning which have characterized conventional methods.
