A method for producing an adherent diamond film on a hard substrate is disclosed. Particularly, the present invention discloses a method of preparing the surface of a cemented tungsten carbide surface such that an adherent polycrystalline diamond coating may be deposited thereon using CVD deposition methods. Cutting tool inserts, drill bits and the like so produced from such adherent diamond film coated cemented tungsten carbide articles are also disclosed.
