A method of sterilizing seeds comprises heating the seeds to substantially 95~C or higher and maintaining same at that temperature for substantially 30 minutes. Preferably a combination of steam and microwaves is used to maintain the temperature. Dampening the seeds with steam and water at the start of the process helps the microwaves work more efficiently in maintaining temperature. The method further comprises treating the seeds with ozone which functions both to sterilize seeds as well as to sterilize pathogenic organisms and to degrade residual herbicides, pesticides and like chemicals that may be present in a seed sample. An auger conveyor (7) carries the seed through the process. Temperature sensors (13) monitor the temperature of the seeds and control the speed of the auger so that the seeds are maintained at substantially 95 ~C for substantially 30 minutes prior to exiting the output end of the auger conveyor (7). Ozone sensors (17) monitor ozone concentration in order to maintain a concentration of ozone effective to sterilize biological materials as well as to degrade residual chemicals present in seed samples. The auger (7) continuously agitates the seed to expose the seeds to the microwaves and ozone.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de stérilisation des semences, selon lequel on chauffe les semences à une température sensiblement supérieure ou égale à 95 ·C, que l'on maintient pendant sensiblement 30 minutes. On utilise de préférence une combinaison de vapeur et de micro-ondes pour maintenir la température. On augmente l'efficacité des micro-ondes à maintenir la température en humidifiant les semences avec de la vapeur et de l'eau au début du processus. Selon le procédé de l'invention, on traite en outre les semences avec de l'ozone qui sert à la fois à stériliser les semences, à détruire les organismes pathogènes et à dégrader les herbicides, pesticides et produits chimiques analogues résiduels qui peuvent être présents dans l'échantillon de semences.Un transporteur à vis (7) transporte les semences tout au long du processus. Des capteurs de température (13) surveillent la température des semences et règlent la vitesse du transporteur de façon que les semences sont maintenues à une température de sensiblement 95 ·C pendant 30 minutes avant de quitter le transporteur à vis (7) par l'extrémité de sortie. Des capteurs d'ozone (17) surveillent la concentration en ozone afin de maintenir une concentration d'ozone efficace pour stériliser les matières biologiques et dégrader les substances chimiques présentes dans les échantillons de semences. Le transporteur (7) agite les semences en continu afin de les exposer aux micro-ondes et à l'ozone.
