In a photographic processing machine, a method for detecting the presence of a film without the need for a reference film. A light receiver has an output with a reference level. A higher reference level is temporarily set, and a light emitter is then increased in illumination until the higher reference level is reached in the light emitter. The light emitter is then preset. As a result, the light emitter has a margin of illumination over the reference level.
