ABSTRACT Method of detecting flaws in the rims of lap seamed substantially cylindrical ferrous objects. A magnetic sensor scans the object rim and generates a wave form signal containing portions which respectively represent magnetic field disturbances caused by rim flaws ant the rim lap area, the flaw wave form portion having a smaller amplitude and higher frequency than the lap area wave form portion. The wave form signal is processed to obtain a relatively greater voltage amplitude for the flaw wave form portion. Its total peak-to-peak voltage is obtained and compared to the maximum acceptable voltage value for flaws. When the former exceeds the latter, a signal is generated which indicates unacceptability of the flaw. Wave form signal processing preferably is through an A.C. coupled amplifier and through first and second high pass frequency filter stages. The lap area wave form portion preferably can be removed from the wave form signal to obtain a non-lap area wave form signal whose total peak-to-peak voltage is similarly obtained and compared to a maximum acceptable voltage value for non-lap area flaws to obtain a signal which indicates unacceptability of the flaw. The entire rim of the object can be fully scanned within 390° of rotation of the object.
