ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A method of monitoring or detecting the aging change in embrittlement of a zirconium alloy material used in a nuclear reactor. The method comprises the steps of measuring a first propagation velocity V1 of a false AE wave propagated through the zirconium alloy material in the nuclear reactor, measuring a second propagation velocity V2 of the same at a time after elapse of a predetermined period of time from the measurement of the first propagation velocity, and determining the amont of oriented hydrides distributed in the zirconium alloy from the ratio V2/V1 of propagation velocity, thereby to determine the degree of embrittlement of the zirconium alloy material.
